Suspension of Disbelief: FULL METAL JACKET
The helicopters shown in the movie are of the following model: Wessex, by UK manufacturer Westland. This particular type of chopper was never flown during the Vietnam war. But it did see action in the Falklands war. As FMJ was lensed in England, and because Sikorsky H-34 Chochtaws would be hard to acquire for movies shot in 1986, Kubrick used local helos that were similar-looking. The Wessex is based upon the Choctaw design, but is turbine powered.
